Government organizations and institutions are facing steep challenges to efficiently manage the massive amounts of multimedia content and associated metadata needed to fulfill their mission to actively reach, inform and better engage with citizens. To overcome these challenges, they require proven solutions that meet their demanding requirements in terms of efficiency, agility, security, cost, and integration.

There is a lot that can be learned from the broadcast industry when it comes to optimizing the way you produce, manage and distribute media assets. While not an exhaustive list, this blog provides ten things government agencies and institutions should consider when planning to implement a solution to streamline their media operations. Most of these topics were actually part of discussions I had with customers and partners at GV Expo 2018. If you were not able to attend the show don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss further!

Metadata, Metadata, Metadata

As organizations increase the amount of media content they store, that content can only be managed and used at its best if it is properly classified, easily discoverable and immediately  available where and when needed. The first basic action to enable this is to associate rich metadata to it. Metadata is the key to maximizing the value of your content. Organizations such as NASA and the United Nations leverage their media asset management (MAM) platform to manage their ever-growing metadata needs. Look for a platform that enables flexible, scalable, and secure data models to help meet your current needs while laying an agile foundation for future metadata enrichment challenges.

The Power of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

One of the fastest growing technology trends to enrich the metadata of your content is through AI. Whether it be speech-to-text, facial recognition or other cognitive services, AI can help your organization automate much of your metadata logging and then offer contextual content suggestions, providing greater content visibility and usage across your entire organization. Building a core framework for AI as part of your MAM strategy will help future-proof your underlying data model for years to come.

Collaborative Tools and Workflows

Breaking down silos to improve efficiency is a critical objective of many organizations, particulary, government agencies and institutions. Leading MAM platforms help break down those silos by enabling agile, connected workflows that increase productivity for digital content operations. Collaboration needs to span across the entire workflow (from planning through scripting, production all the way to broadcast and distribution) with a unified content catalogue, shared media bins and powerful chat features.

Multiplatform Distribution

Given the high number of outlets to feed and the speed at which content should be produced and delivered, managing the distribution of content is a complex exercise. Media organizations such as Voice of America need to push their content all around the globe and engage audiences on multiple platforms. Most advanced MAM platforms, such as Dalet Galaxy five, provide these organizations a level of transparency for their media management, allowing users to quickly access their content and distribute it wherever they need in whatever shape they need.

Ensure Scalability

With content acquisition increasing, building your operation on a proven, scalable architecture to manage volume is critical. State-of-the-art media operations require unparalleled transparency of content between storage tiers. With a cloud-ready architecture, you are also able to take full advantage of scalability mechanisms to make significant savings on your infrastructure. MAM based on a distributed architecture can be adapted to the level of functionality your organization requires as your needs evolve.

ITAM Security

Poor asset control and management can lead to weakened content security. As much as possible, organizations need to seek to control their assets from a single platform. The better control and visibility your organization has over its assets the more it reduces the risks posed by outside threats. Managing disparate storage units, preventing unauthorized access to content, and auditing every user and system action on every piece of content should be centralized and made simple. The Dalet Galaxy five platform can be deployed in a FedRAMP-compliant service environment, and is ISO 27001:2013 certified. With Active Directory (AD) integration, you benefit from a centralized management of users and rights. In addition to tightly integrated user authentication, system auditing provides a log of actions performed by users.

Gain Workflow Efficiencies

Not all MAM solutions are created equal and not all natively integrate orchestration capabilities, which are crucial for automating content transactions that can otherwise bog down the operation. Dalet’s workflow orchestration engine allows you to streamline your organization’s media lifecycle processes for quicker delivery of your content. The engine orchestrates many human tasks and automates background processes that fast-track the end-to-end content preparation and distribution workflow.

Library Management & Archiving

From small to large-scale organizations, a well managed, accessible and connected archive is an essential and valuable part of any content operation. Realizing this importance, Dalet offers end-to-end Archive solutions to optimize your workflow and to maximize your assets.
Dalet’s highly flexible Archive solutions manage all types of multimedia content, including video, audio, texts, documents and more. Making media easily accessible and findable from any location through a web, mobile client or third-party system is key to your workflow success!

Actionable Business Intelligence

Once your organization has a rich set of data complementing your assets, it’s critical to leverage the data to help optimize your operations as well as drive actionable insights. By compiling relevant analytics, organizations can replicate editorial success based on reports of content usage, better understand your organization’s key impacts based on analytics of consumption, better use talent based on information about productivity, and enhance technical infrastructure based on technical information gathered. The Dalet Report Center gives government organizations what today’s business demands: a business analytics solution that is truly enterprise-ready.
